CAREER CENTER OVERVIEW: 

The mission of the Marquette University Career Center is to empower undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni to engage in ongoing career discernment, supporting their pursuit of lives of meaning and purpose. All of this is done in collaboration with campus and community partners, employers, and alumni. 

CAREER EDUCATION INTERN OVERVIEW: 

Housed in the Student Success Center, The Career Education Intern is a vital member of a team comprised of 5 undergraduate students within the Career Center. This collaborative team plays a crucial role in supporting and mentoring fellow students directly and indirectly on fundamental career-related topics, including resumes, cover letters, brief practice interviews, Handshake usage, and internship/job search presentations. 

Previous knowledge is not required regarding professional development and material building. Our office is committed to providing comprehensive on-the-job training that guides each Career Education Intern with the tools they will need to be successful in the role. This position is particularly well-suited for students with interests in counseling, public service, non-profit, education, human resources, higher education administration, or social work. That being said, all majors are encouraged and welcome to apply!  

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Hours typically range from 8-10 hours per week. 

Career Center Drop-in Hours (Monday—Friday from 11:00am-12:45pm; AND Monday-Thursday from 3:00pm-4:45pm) 

Perform individual resume and cover letter reviews both in-person and electronically 

Conduct brief practice interviews with students and provide appropriate feedback 

Provide Handshake (online career platform) overviews and assistance 

Outreach  

Conduct presentations for student groups and classrooms on various career-related topics  

 Represent Career Center at campus events  

Serve as Career Center ambassador to promote services, resources, and events on campus via classroom and student organization announcements 

Administrative Duties   

General Handshake (online career platform) maintenance such as:  

User request approvals and event creation  

Tracking drop-ins and presentations  

Additional related projects to contribute to the Career Center 

 

 *Note: no prior knowledge of resume, cover letter, practice interviewing, nor the administrative side of Handshake is needed as thorough training will be provided. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Basic requirements: 

Good standing with the University (both academic and disciplinary)  

Relationship-building: 

Capability to display empathy, patience, and discretion when working with students 

Strong interpersonal and written communication skills   

Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a team   

Positive Attitude & Work-Ethic 

Ability to work independently and accept individual responsibility for projects or assignments   

High degree of organization, detail orientation, and reliability   

Initiative and self-motivation to complete tasks and develop new initiatives when appropriate   

Positive attitude and strong desire to continually learn and develop  

Bonus: 

Bilingual (English and Spanish) capabilities are preferred but not required
